Client case study

Geological map digitisation: client case study

A real project for one client, shown with the client's details removed. Seven stages take the original source material to a finished digital geological map.

  1. Stage 1: original topographic base map

    1. Original topographic base map

The topographic base the geological map is built on.

  2. Stage 2: base map

    2. Base map

The base map prepared for the geological detail.

  3. Stage 3: hand-drawn geological interpretation and annotations

    3. Hand-drawn geological interpretation and annotations

The geological interpretation, sketched and annotated by hand.

  4. Stage 4: additional wells and reference points

    4. Additional wells and reference points

Wells and reference points, positioned on the map.

  5. Stage 5: blocks, boundaries and technical map details

    5. Blocks, boundaries and technical map details

The blocks, boundaries and technical details that make the map usable.

  6. Stage 6: geological colour coding and shading

    6. Geological colour coding and shading

Colour and shading that separate the geological units clearly.

  7. Stage 7: final professionally digitised vector map

    7. Final professionally digitised vector map

The finished digital vector map, ready for reports, presentations and GIS.

Geological map drafting and digitisation

Geological maps often start as a mix of base maps, field sketches, data and handwritten notes. We draft and digitise that material into one clear, accurate map, with consistent symbols, colours and labels.

The same applies to topographic map design, palaeogeography maps, 3D geological maps and edits to existing maps. Your geologists supply the information; we make sure it reads clearly to geoscientists and to readers with no technical background.

Cross sections, well correlations and stratigraphic columns

Cross sections, well correlation panels and stratigraphic columns carry a lot of detail in a small space. We draft them so the structure, the units and the correlations can be read at a glance, in print and on screen.

Diagrams, charts and 3D geological figures

Diagram design, charts and 3D geological figures for reports, presentations and publications, drawn in the same style as your maps so every figure in a document matches.

Frequently asked questions

Do you interpret the geology?

No. We work from the geological information your team supplies. Our role is drafting, digitisation and presentation, so the finished map shows your interpretation accurately and clearly.

What do you need from us to start?

The source material you have: base maps, sketches, data, annotations, and any style or report requirements. Then we can quote.

What files will we receive?

A print-ready PDF, high-resolution images, editable vector files, and SHP or TAB files where your team needs the map in ArcGIS or MapInfo.

Can figures be prepared for ASX announcements or journals?

Yes. Files can be sized for ASX or journal submission, and we also design the annual reports those figures appear in.

How much does geological illustration cost?

Every project is quoted individually. Send the number of maps and figures, the source material and your deadline, and we will reply with a quote.

Will our project details stay confidential?

We never name clients or projects on our website. The case study above is shown with the client's details removed.

Do you work with companies outside Perth?

Yes. We are based in Perth, WA, and work remotely with companies across Australia and internationally.
